UNDERSTANDING HERITAGE IN INDIAN SCENARIO,
4-5-6 March 2019, Conference/Workshop in Chandigarh (Punjab, India)
We were invited by the Heritage Preservation Atelier, organisers of Understanding Heritage in Indian Scenario in Chandigarh, to participate in 3 very productive days of workshops and lectures on the subject of the conservation of Shekhawati heritage. We spoke about museology, restoration and preventive conservation specific to India, and about future projects.
DAY 1
- Round table: The conservation and restoration of works present in Indian institutions.
Experts from different regions of India presented their projects, preoccupations and their difficulties concerning awareness-raising with the authorities and the search for funds.

DAY 2
Presentation of case studies of mural painting restoration workshops.
- The Shekhawati Project training workshops at Le Prince Haveli, by Léa Marie and Harpreet Tanday.
- The restoration of mural paintings in Italy, by Harpreet Tanday, restorer at the Shekhawati Project.
Comparing these two workshops enabled us to highlight two very different methods of working.
- A preventive conservation workshop by Namita Jaspal, Director of the Heritage Preservation Atelier and The Shekhawati Project ambassador for India.
DAY 3
- Round Table: the conservation of objects and artworks: problems, reflections and solutions.
- Lecture: Preventive conservation and laboratory work, by Namita Jaspal (Director of Heritage Preservation Atelier).
Visit of the architecture museum in Chandigarh.

UNDERSTANDING HERITAGE IN INDIAN SCENARIO,
4-5-6 Mars 2019, Conférence/Atelier à Chandigarh (Punjab, Inde)
Invités par Namita Jaspal de Heritage Preservation Atelier, organisateurs de "Understanding Heritage in Indian Scenario" à Chandigarh, nous avons participé à 3 riches journées d’ateliers/conférences autour de la préservation du patrimoine en Inde. Nous avons parlé de muséologie, restauration, conservation préventive spécifiques à l’Inde et de projets à venir.
L'accent pour ces trois journées a été mis sur les collections de musées et autres institutions culturelles. Comprendre la situation actuelle de telles institutions en Inde nous a permis de mieux cerner les difficultés rencontrées et au delà de tout, le manque d'intérêt général pour le patrimoine, qu'il soit architectural, pictural, etc. Toutefois, ceci ne fait qu'accentuer l'envie de tous ces professionnels de la conservation et restauration l'envie de partager connaissances et expériences et œuvrer pour améliorer la situation actuelle.
Ces 3 journées ont été rythmées par de nombreux échanges, structurés comme ceci :
JOURNÉE 1
- Table ronde : La conservation et la restauration des œuvres présentes dans les institutions indiennes.
Des experts, venus de différentes régions de l’Inde, ont exprimé leurs projets, préoccupations et difficultés liées à la sensibilisation des autorités et à la recherche de subventions.

JOURNÉE 2
Présentation d’études de cas de chantiers de restauration de peintures murales.
- Les chantiers/école de restauration The Shekhawati Project à la haveli Le Prince par Léa Marie et Harpreet Tanday.
- La restauration de peintures murales en Italie par Harpreet Tanday, restauratrice du The Shekhawati Project.
La mise en parallèle de ces deux chantiers nous a permis de mettre en lumière deux manières de faire très différentes.
- Un atelier de conservation préventive par Namita Jaspal, Directrice du Heritage Preservation Atelier et Ambassadrice Inde The Shekhawati Project.
JOURNÉE 3
- Visite du musée d’architecture de Chandigarh.
- Table ronde : La conservation des objets et dessins : problèmes, réflexions et solutions. À partir de nos observations à la suite de notre visite du musée d'architecture, nous avons pu mettre nos idées en commun et trouver des solutions quand à la bonne gestion des collections et leur exposition.
- Conférence : La conservation préventive et le travail en laboratoire, par Namita Jaspal (Directrice du Heritage Preservation Atelier).
